Before Your Term Life Insurance Renews, Understand What Changes
A term life insurance policy can sit quietly in the background for years. The premium arrives, you pay it, and life moves on. A renewal notice is a reason to pause and understand what happens next.
The key question is not simply whether you still have insurance. It is whether the next stage of the policy works the way you expect.
Find the dates that matter
Locate the policy and the latest notice from the insurer. Identify the end of the current term or level-premium period. Those dates may mean different things under your contract, so ask the insurer to explain them.
Write down any deadline for making a decision. Keeping the notice with the policy makes it easier to compare the wording and ask a specific question.
Ask about the next premium
The NAIC explains that some term policies allow renewal, but renewal premiums may be higher. Renewal rights can also have age limits.
Ask for the actual premium schedule that applies to your policy. Find out whether the amount changes once, increases over time or depends on an option you select. Avoid building a household budget around an assumption.
Understand the options in your own contract
Ask whether your policy is renewable and whether it includes a conversion option. If conversion is available, ask about the deadline, eligible products and resulting cost.
The existence of an option does not mean it is the right choice for everyone. Your current obligations, budget and available coverage all belong in the discussion. A general online explanation cannot tell you what your individual contract allows.
Revisit the reason you bought the coverage
Think about the people and expenses the policy was intended to protect. Have debts changed? Does someone still depend on your income? Are there obligations you did not have when the policy began?
Bring those details to the conversation. The goal is to understand your situation before deciding whether to keep, change or seek other coverage.
If considering replacement, do not cancel an existing policy before confirming that any intended new coverage is issued and in force.
Questions to take to your agent
Does renewal always mean the same price? No. Ask the insurer for the premium that applies after the current period and how later premiums may change.
Does every term policy have a conversion option? No. Availability, timing and conditions depend on the policy. Read your contract and ask the insurer to explain it.
